Make Time Home School Classes

We are excited to introduce our Home School STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Classes for ages 7-14.  These courses provide an immersive, age appropriate experience centered on a particular theme or skill set.  Students will discover new concepts through hands on learning experiences.  Class subjects range from robotics, engineering, and 3D printing to craft activities and self expression through art.  Read below for detailed information.

September/October Class Descriptions

Programming

Monday 12pm - 2pm

Parents,
In this course we will explore the world of “Coding.” Students will begin by exploring SCRATCH a graphics based programming environment that helps to illustrate Algorithmic Thinking (the backbone of programming) . Then we quickly move on to the basics of programming through the use of Python. Python is a general use programming language that packs a lot of power. It's used by large corporations like Google, DropBox and Instagram because of its flexibility. We use it as a beginner programming language because of the simplicity of the code. Possibly the biggest benefit of learning Python is that your student can take their new knowledge and use it with the Raspberry Pi. Raspberry Pi is a small, extremely inexpensive computer that can be used to create robots, home automation and much more. If your student is showing signs of interest in technology this is a perfect “gateway” course to help guide them into this fantastic and fast growing world.

Students,
Imagine if you and your friends could create your own video games then sit down and play them together. In this class we’ll explore the tools you need to learn to code. You’ll use SCRATCH to learn how coding works. We’ll build a platformer mini-video game that you can share with your friends and family. You’ll learn how you can use the programming language Python to make everything from games to websites. If you’ve ever wanted to be a programming master this class is for you.

Electronics Hack Lab

Thursday 12-2pm

Parents,
During this course your students will explore the world of electronics and engineering by taking apart broken (or old) machines, identifying the parts that work, removing them and using them to create new machines of their own design. They will gain a greater understanding of how circuits work as well as engineering by opening and “playing” with mechanical objects then repurposing the parts to create something new. Exploratory deconstruction (and play) feed your student's curiosity and help it blossom into a healthy interest in subjects like engineering, electronics and even math. At the end of the course your student will take home their creations.

Students,
Do you ever wonder what’s inside the machines in your house? You could open them to find out, but usually that gets you in trouble with your parents. In this class we’ll take apart old or broken machines, figure out what the parts do, then pull them out and make new machines (robots, cars, and things that move) with them. You’ll combine your imagination with our tools and tech to make amazing things. Make a robot that draws, a solar powered car, or an underwater ROV - the only limit is your imagination. You create the idea and we’ll help you to build it.
